Remedial Massage

Massage Therapy involves hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body (muscles, tendons and ligaments) to promote and restore optimum health and well-being. Massage has a therapeutic effect on the body by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. It has positive benefits for each of the three aspects of health – body, mind, and emotion.

What are the benefits of massage?
Massage Therapy can be extremely beneficial for many people. As the pace of modern life increases, the number of people now suffering from conditions, such as work related stress and anxiety, is also growing. Muscle tension and pain can result from sedentary lifestyles and poor posture as well as intense exercise and manual labour. A masseuse can relieve both physical and emotional tension, thus improving your overall mood as well.

Massage is a highly effective treatment that can be used to treat a wide range of conditions, such as:

  • Muscular tension and pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Repetitive strain injury
  • Work-related stress
  • Insomnia related to stress
  • Anxiety
  • Digestive disorders
  • Pre-natal conditions
  • ‘Frozen shoulder’
  • Whiplash
  • Post-operative rehabilitation
  • Sports injuries
  • Circulatory problems

What kind of massage would suit me best?
Most people wait until pain occurs before seeking assistance, but having a regular massage is a highly effective preventative measure. It also helps to improve an individual’s overall sense of well-being for optimum physical and mental health. A wide range of different massage techniques are used by our Physiotherapists at ardentherapy. They all have the same overall goal – that of restoring structural balance to the body.

Remedial Massage
Remedial Massage is the systematic assessment and treatment of the muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues of the body to assist in rehabilitation of pain and injury management. It is designed to create favourable conditions for the body to return to normal health after injury. If a patient has suffered a moderate injury resulting in structural pain and/or loss of function, then remediation is required to reduce or eliminate pain and restore normal functionality.

Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Therapy is similar to Swedish/Relaxation Massage in that the same strokes are used, but in this case, the focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia – the protective tissue surrounding muscles, bones and joints. This deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension.

Sports Massage
Sports Massage Therapy is provided for the sole purpose of returning the client back to his/her sports activity with restored normal or improved levels of functionality. Sports Massage may often use a variety of techniques from modalities such as Remedial Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, Deep Tissue Massage and Cross-Fibre techniques. Of course, similar injuries may occur that are non-sports related, for example, workplace accidents and accidents generally around the home. Clients presenting under these circumstances are also likely to be treated with Sports Massage techniques for best results.

Pregnancy Massage
Pregnancy is a special, exciting and sometimes challenging time for women. Women experience any number of physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, some changes can even continue into the postpartum period. A specialised pregnancy massage offers a light, comforting and nurturing treatment which can alleviate discomfort and pain, improve circulation and lymph flow to decrease fluid retention, and relax both mother and baby.

Swedish/Relaxation Massage
Swedish Massage is a modality of massage specifically designed to relax muscles. The main purpose of such massage is to increase oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Other benefits include improved blood circulation, improved muscle tone, and shorter recovery periods from muscle strain by flushing lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes from the muscles and tissues.
